Vents
Adequate ventilation helps maintain appropriate air flow to the attic and roof. As warm air naturally rises, it becomes trapped in the uppermost part of the house. If not given the opportunity to escape through a proper ventilation system, overheating occurs and moisture remains confined inside. Condensation causes interior damage as well as hidden damage to the roofing system. There is a danger of mold/mildew growing within the home. Improper ventilation also decreases the life of the shingles. Roof deck warping and fastener back-outs may be signs from the outside of your home that there is improper ventilation.
Chimneys
Chimney leaks cause problems that can be costly to repair. A repair would include replacing the chimney flashing by cutting and fitting new sheet metal and installing it around the base of the chimney. When the flashing no longer provides the watertight connection between the chimney and roof, water seeps in and causes damage to the interior and exterior of your home. Over time flashing wears out and needs to be replaced.
Valleys
Valleys are a crucial area of the roof as the roof’s planes intersect. If not installed properly water can be channeled directly into the house rather than toward the exterior edge of the roof. There are three types of valleys: open, closed and woven. When working with open valleys, proper flashing is installed in the center line of the valley to enhance easy removal of rain, snow, and debris. If debris is left to collect in the valley, water is forced up under the shingles which results in the need for shingle repairs. Open valleys also aid in the prevention of granule loss to the shingles. Closed valleys require fewer steps than open valleys and do not involve the installation of metal flashing, thus saving on time and money. Here, shingles meet together at the center line of the valley creating a “closed” look. Customers are pleased with the aesthetics of a closed valley. A woven valley is the least used because it does not allow shingles to provide as tight of a seal against water. Many people find their appearance to be less attractive.
Pipes
Every home needs pipes protruding through the roof to allow for airflow to the plumbing inside the home. This is another potential area for leaks to occur. A pipe boot is a type of roof flashing used around the plumbing exhaust pipes. Over time pipe boots crack or split requiring attention. By installing a correctly-sized new pipe boot that secures a watertight seal, leaks can be prevented.
Skylights
Are your ceilings low? Do you have dark, cramped-feeling spaces that need more light? Brighten up your house by adding skylights. Designed to capture up to 30% more light, skylights create the impression of increased space as well as add more warmth in the winter months. Natural light provides health benefits and boosts overall mood, thus increasing productivity in your daily life. If you’re considering adding a skylight, the best time to do it is at the time of roof replacement. You can improve the overall look and appeal of your home by adding skylights.
Gutters
A proper gutter system works to adequately move water away from the house. When there is a break in the system there can be damage to your roof, the foundation of your home, as well as your landscaping. We make sure gutters are left clean of roofing materials and all other debris before leaving the premises. Ask us about adding leaf protection to enhance the performance of your gutter system.
